Dogs and cows

Talking of tending (see last post), dogs don't get much of a life in Kathmandu. In our wanderings, Sophorn and I saw loads of them. All curled up looking doped or asleep. And all ragged and uncared for. At one point we wondered whether an official Dog Drugger was doing the rounds, injecting them all with Tamazipan or something. It just seemed odd, so many of them and not a bark to be heard.

Not so for cows, however. They have a great life in Kathmandu. They can wander into the road and enjoy deep respect and reverance as cars, buses and trucks stop dead in their tracks just to let them by.

For the cow is a sacred beast in Hinduism. And you'll be pushed to find a beef Madras in any of the restaurants in town. Or a curled up bovine street sleeper all out of oomph and moo's.
