Hobbit

Am off to see The Hobbit tonight before welcoming in the new year.

This morning I read an article looking ahead to 2013 (The Traveller’s Rest - A Non Word for 2013 by Paul Leader - http://3generations.eu/blog/archives/6739) and it quoted a line from the film:

Gandalf: Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay… small acts of kindness and love."

I like that. And will listen out for it tonight.

Looking ahead to the coming year I'm not especially thinking of Big Things. The summer of 2012 was full of Big Things and it was a great time to be in the UK. Great to be there for the Queen's Jubilee, the Olympics, C12 (otherwise known as the World Horizons 30th birthday celebration) and the Paralympics.

The things I remember most though were nowt to do with the hype or scale of events. They were things like......

- Drinking tea, eating scones and laughing with M&D and Eira in the back garden under Mum's Jubilee bunting the day after getting back from Cambodia.
- Eating cake in Mum and Dad's campervan on a soggy Jubilee afternoon with M&D, Freya, Ferdy Felix (niece and nephews) and Puppet Liz.
- Waving to the Queen and Prince Phulup on West Cowes sea-front among a load of excitable Isle of Wighters.
- Getting up early for the "All the Bells" country-wide herald to the Olympics and hooting a hooter to the sound of church bells.
- Tom Daley getting the bronze and jumping into the pool after with all his mates.
- Car journey and talkathon with Carol all the way to the C12.
- C12 lunch prep - chopping up tomatoes and catching up with friends.
- Cheering the Cambodian Paralympians when they emerged into the Olympic stadium and getting just a bit emotional.

And loads more besides.

So all the small things add up I guess. And it's the small things I'm looking forward to most next year.

So happy new year and here's to one full of happy details and random acts of kindness and love.

Cheers :-)
