Farm
Am away this week-end with Stuart at a farm near a place called Angk Tasorm. It's also a community project run by an extended khmer family who open up their home for people to stay and, if they like, join in with day-to-day life (see www.cambodianhomestay.com).
In a pique of enthusiasm a few days ago, we emailed to say we'd have a go at teaching English to some of the local kids who come to the project after school. Great idea at the time but after a hassley, bumpy bus ride here, enthusiasm was fast fading once we arrived.
Thankfully there was time for a power nap and a coffee before they all descended and then we were there, in the thick of it. About thirty teenagers gathered round us, asking loads of questions and chatting almost fluently in English. Which was a surprise as we'd only prepared really basic stuff.
The bigger surprise was to come, though. Shortly after we found ourselves standing at the front of a classroom with them all staring eagerly at us, waiting for us to teach for the next hour or so.
Not sure how we did it, but we managed to fill the time with stories, songs, quizzes and games. And it was a right hoot. One of my happiest moments this year. Realised in the midst of completely winging it: "I. Really. Like. This."
So here's to more random spontaniety in the days and months to come.
And here's some memories of a particularly merry and marvellous time.....
